Nail trimming is an essential part of any manicure or pedicure, but for many of us it is treated as a trivial and often urgent job. But healthy, happy hands benefit from basic nail care. Here are some tips on how to get a perfect nail cut with nail scissors.

1. Choose the right Tool

Choose a tool that gives you the best grip, precision and comfort. This can be nail scissors, nail clippers or nail clippers: whatever tool you use, make sure it is made of high-quality metal, such as stainless steel, and that it can be cleaned thoroughly without being damaged by washing and sterilisation.

2. Shape your nails

After choosing your tool, think about what your nails look like. How do you shape your nails? The answer is simple: Nature has already created the perfect shape for your nails.

Look at the cuticle – the skin of the cuticle, which is usually slightly rounded. Its shape gives you an idea what the edge of the nail will look like when you cut it. Try to follow the shape of the cuticle by repeating the curve in reverse order.

The most common shapes are oval, square or shark-shaped (a combination of both). With well-trimmed nails, you’ll always look stylish, and these shapes suit most nail types.

3. Determining Nail Length

The next question is the length. How long are your nails? It depends on whether we are talking about fingernails or toenails. In the case of the latter, the rule is to leave only one end too short to prevent it from rubbing against your shoes. For nails, there is no exact rule: it is enough that you feel comfortable in your daily activities.

Often, your style and the natural health of your nails can give you the best clue. For example, if you have brittle nails, it’s best to avoid long nails, as they can break more easily. Depending on your profession, you should also consider what is socially acceptable and the type of work you do. For example, if you play the guitar, you may find it uncomfortable to have long nails.

Whatever the length, make sure your nails are always neat under the tips. When you start to feel uncomfortable in your daily activities, it is time to cut your nails.

Before Cutting the Nails

  • Prepare your tools, a basin of warm water and a clean towel or napkin.
  • Wash and dry your hands. This prevents the spread of bacteria and softens your nails, making them easier to cut.
  • Cut your nails gently, without cutting the skin around the nail.
  • File the nails from the sides of the nail towards the centre.
  • Gently remove dirt from under the tip of the nail with the end of the nail file.
  • Apply hand and nail cream (invest in a good quality hand cream for extra comfort).

How to Cut Toe-Nails

Trimming toenails is a little different from cutting fingernails. Unlike fingernails, toenails should be cut straight in one sweep and the edges rounded with a nail file. The straight edges of the nails reduce friction against shoes and minimise the risk of ingrown toenails.

Tools used to cut toenails include nail scissors, nail clippers and nail clippers with a wider head that provides a unique cut. It’s up to you, but choose the one that gives you the best grip, comfort and precision.

The best time to cut your nails is after a bath or shower, when they are clean and a little soft.
